Abstract

This seminal work on Qaraite literature and history, based primarily on Mss. in the Firkovich Collection (St. Petersburg), includes a plethora of excerpts containing, inter alia, specimens of Judaeo-Arabic translations, glosses, and lexical equivalents. The larger of the aforementioned excerpts (in Hebrew translation; with the Judaeo-Arabic text selectively supplied) are from David b. Abraham al-Fāsī’s biblical lexicon (Pinsker 1:123–66, 170–75, 199–202, 206–16; 2:71 [n. 1], 107–9), ʿAlī b. Sulaymān’s abridgement of al-Fāsī’s Lexicon (1:178–99, 202–16), an anonymous Arabic glossary to the Prophets and Writings (1:227–32, ad Isa 1, Josh, and Judg), Salmon b. Yeruḥam’s Judaeo-Arabic translation and commentary on Eccl 1:3 (2:112–13), and Yefet b. Eli’s Judaeo-Arabic translation and commentary on Eccl 1:3 (2:109–11; incorrectly attributed by Pinsker to Benjamin al-Nahāwandī). See the lengthy review by A.
