<note type="abstract">Arbache’s study of MS: Sinai, St. Catherine's Monastery, Ar. 72 first investigates the rubrics, both non-liturgical and liturgical and gives French translation and commentary. In doing so, he compares the lectionary system of the manuscript to other examples of the ancient Jerusalemite liturgy before Byzantinization. He also discusses the historical and social background of the manuscript and concludes that it most likely came from an Arabic-speaking monastic community in the vicinity of Jerusalem. The second part of the thesis analyzes the main Gospel text of the manuscript. He compares the text to other manuscripts of its family (in particular MS: Vatican, Biblioteca apostolica vaticana, Borg. ar. 95 through Bernhard Levin’s transcription <ref target="https://biblia-arabica.com/bibl/SDX8NVHW">https://biblia-arabica.com/bibl/SDX8NVHW</ref>) and concludes that the family was translated from Greek and MS: Sinai, St. Catherine's Monastery, Ar. 72 represents an attempt to correct the language and has significant Aramaic or Syriac influence. Finally, Arbache compares the text of MS: Sinai, St. Catherine's Monastery, Ar. 72 with other manuscripts in the wider transmission of the Gospels in two surveys. The first survey followed Edward Hutton’s ‘Triple Reading’s’ and found mixed results across the Gospels but Arbache declined to make firm assessments on the basis of this survey because of the limited nature of the data. The second survey focussed on Jn. 6:52-71 using René Kieffer’s monograph on this passage and found that MS: Sinai, St. Catherine's Monastery, Ar. 72 had a strong affinity to ‘Western’ readings with a possible affinity with ‘Caesarean’ readings.</note>
