The author seems to suggest that this peculiar usage, unattested in Muslim Arabic literature, may have been motivated by the difficulty in finding a suitable translation for the Hebrew word, but also speculates that it may once have been a living feature of Non-Muslim Arabic vernaculars. No explanation can be given as to the apparently interchangeable use of both رت and ثور in Saadiah’s translation.
