Although other important works on certain aspects of the topic have appeared more recently and some of the author’s judgements have been called into question, it still provides a useful framework for the study and classification of manuscripts and contains many valuable observations. Most of the results of the thesis were presented afterwards in a number of articles by the author.
The first chapters deal with preliminary issues that have direct or indirect bearing on the question when and how the Samaritan Pentateuch was translated into Arabic: the replacement of Aramaic by Arabic as a spoken and written language in the Samaritan community and the roles of the Samaritan scholars Abū l-Ḥasan al-Ṣūrī and Abū Saʿīd in the creation of the translation. The author states that by the 11th century, the need for an Arabic translation must have made itself felt. Abū al-Ḥasan, who is traditionally held to be the translator, may well have undertaken such a task for the whole of the Pentateuch, even though no clear-cut evidence can be adduced. Abū Saʿīd, on the other hand, made a revision of an existing translation during the 13th century.
The author then proceeds to the analysis of the textual evidence and concludes that the manuscripts contain different types of translations: (1) An old type, transmitted in multilingual manuscripts in Samaritan script. The oldest dated example is MS: Nablus, Samaritan Synagogue, 6 (1204 C. E.). Saadian influence is, in Shehadeh’s opinion, very limited in this text type. (2) Abū Saʿīd’s revised text, of which MS: Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale, Ar. 5. is the prime example. His aquaintance with Saadiah’s translation can be shown, though mainly in the avoidance of agreement in wording. (3) Composite versions of the old and the revised text. MS: Oxford, Bodleian Library, Or. 139, which contains partly a Samaritan text and partly an adaption of Saadiah's translation, is also counted among this group, but not consistently in all parts of the dissertation. (4) An adaptation of Saadiah’s translation, as represented by MS: London, British Library, Or. 7562. This classification was later subject to some changes and expansions in other publications by the author.
The last chapters contain a bibliographical survey of previous editions of the Samaritan Arabic translation and descriptions of the manuscripts perused by the author.
The thesis was submitted in three typescript volumes. Vol. 1 (called "Part A") contains the main text and a detailed English summary, vol. 2 (111 pp.) contains the endnotes to the text, and vol. 3 (101 pp.) contains a handwritten preliminary edition of Leviticus 1-10 with introductory remarks on the manuscripts and the rules of transcription.
