Examines the reasons Bishr b. al-Sirrī translated "Pharisees" as "Muʿtazilā" in Acts and the Epistles in MS: Sinai, St. Catherine's Monastery, Ar. 151. Blumenthal responds to claims made by Joose in his introduction to the Arabic Diatessaron https://biblia-arabica.com/bibl/5EFS752I, arguing that Bishr's affinity for Islamic terminology does not sufficiently account for this translation. He proposes that Bishr represented "Pharisees" (including Paul and Gamaliel) as "Muʿtazilā" because of their pious asceticism and eschatological views, especially about the Resurrection.
