Abstract

An edition and Modern Hebrew translation of two Judaeo-Arabic glossary lists (of difficult and rare words in the Bible) in the Taylor-Schechter Collection which the editors conclude to be pre-Saadianic and possibly pre-Qaraitic, representing a lexical tradition that informed the later Judaeo-Arabic translations of both the Qaraites as well as Saadiah. The verses containing words treated in the lists—with comparison noted to Qaraite Judaeo-Arabic translations and glosses—are Gen 1:20, 27, 30; 2:1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 11, 12; 20:13; 43:11; Exod 31:17; Num 6:12; 12:14; 24:19; 31:7; Lev 14:37; 1 Sam 2:22; 6:16; 17:40; 19:13; 1 Kgs 5:4; 7:6; 2 Kgs 5:23; 8:15; Isa 6:5; 13:21; 25:11; 30:28; 44:13; 50:11; 64:6; Jer 6:29; 15:9; 49:16; Ezek 26:4; 27:5, 10, 25, 28; 42:3; Amos 4:13; Mic 2:6; Pss 41:4; 72:8; 89:9; Prov 23:29; Job 7:1; 14:14; 18:12; Eccl 1:2; 12:8; Dan 3:2, 22; Ezra 6:11; Neh 9:25.
