Abstract

Using the concepts and the tools developed by the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, the author examines the process of translating the Bible into Arabic in the Islamic context comparing the translatability of both the Bible and the Qur’an. He uses the translation of the Gospels byʿAbd Yashūʿ al-Ṣūbāwī (1300 CE) and Van Dyck Translation (1865) as case studies.
