Abstract

Consists of an edition of the Arabic translation and commentary on the book of Esther by one of the preeminent litterateurs of the Karaite "Golden Age", Yefet ben 'Eli ha-Levi. This work also assess Yefet's Arabic translation technique and includes a survey of all extant Karaite commentaries on Esther, both in Arabic as well as Hebrew. An edition and English translation of Yefet’s Judaeo-Arabic translation and commentary on the book of Esther, including his introduction to the book, based on 10 distinct Mss. as represented in 11 separately-catalogued items and a lengthy citation by the Qaraite Judah Meʾir Tawrīzī. Comparative excerpts from the Judaeo-Arabic translation of Salmon b. Yeruḥam and Judaeo-Arabic glosses from the lexicon of David b. Abraham al-Fāsī are cited in the footnotes to the English translation (for the locations of which see Index IV, s.nn.).
